Mountain Activity Camp 2025

From the 18th to the 21st of April 2025, 17 Shackleton Explorers took part in an unforgettable mountain activity camp based at the Cornel Scout Campsite bunkhouse in the heart of Snowdonia. With kit bags unpacked and bunk beds claimed, the team settled into a weekend packed with challenge, adventure, and unforgettable memories.

Saturday: Hiking the Heights

Saturday kicked off with a series of mountain hikes through the spectacular Snowdonia landscape. Explorers split into groups and tackled a range of routes, developing their map reading, compass work, and decision-making in real-world conditions. The climbs were steep and the weather mixed, but spirits remained sky-high. Every summit brought cheers, photos, and a strong sense of accomplishment.

Sunday: Rock Solid Skills

On Sunday, it was time to swap the trails for the crags. Explorers headed out to a local crag for a full day of single pitch climbing. With helmets and harnesses secured, the group learned essential climbing and belaying techniques under the supervision of experienced instructors. Some pushed past their fears, others found a new passion—but all left with a sense of pride (and slightly sore arms!).

Monday: Deep Descent & Dark Tunnels

The final day took the adventure underground—quite literally. Explorers abseiled into a disused quarry, descending sheer rock faces with confidence and control. But that was just the beginning: the only way out was through a winding underground passage. Crawling, and climbing their way through pitch-black tunnels, the group showed incredible teamwork and resilience. The triumphant exit into daylight was a moment to remember.

Building Skills, Confidence, and Community

Throughout the weekend, Shackleton Explorers not only built practical outdoor skills like navigation, climbing, and abseiling—they also grew in confidence, perseverance, and teamwork. The bunkhouse buzzed each evening with laughter, shared stories, and well-earned meals.

A huge thank you goes out to all the leaders and instructors who made the weekend possible. Your dedication, support, and energy helped shape an incredible experience for everyone involved.
