This weekend, a spirited team of seven intrepid explorers from Shackleton Explorer Scout Unit set off on their Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award Expedition across the beautiful Ashdown Forest, with an overnight stay at the ever-popular Broadstone Warren.
Blessed with sunshine and blue skies, the team embarked on their journey with full packs, determination, and smiles all around. Over two days, the group navigated woodland trails, open heathland, and the occasional steep incline, clocking up impressive distances with map and compass in hand.
More than just walking, this expedition was a brilliant opportunity to develop a wide range of skills that will serve them well into the future:
- Navigation & Map Reading: Plotting routes and staying on course through varied terrain.
- Teamwork & Communication: Coordinating pace, decisions, and support across the group.
- Campcraft: Setting up tents efficiently, cooking their own meals, and managing kit.
- Resilience & Independence: Carrying full expedition packs while remaining cheerful and focused throughout.
- Environmental Awareness: Respecting the countryside code and observing wildlife and nature along the way.
Despite the physical challenge, fun was had by all. Highlights included cooking shared meals at camp and navigating tricky junctions with success. There were plenty of laughs, a few sore feet, and a great sense of achievement as they completed their qualifying expedition.
A huge well done to all participants – your hard work and spirit truly embodied the ethos of Shackleton ESU and the DofE Award. A big thank you as well to the leaders and volunteers who supported the planning and supervision of the expedition.
We look forward to seeing these young people take on even greater adventures as they continue their DofE journeys!
