Shackleton ESU – Taking on New Challenges

Over the past two weeks, Shackleton ESU members have taken part in two very different and exciting activities – offering hands-on experience, personal challenge, and a lot of fun along the way.

✈️ Flying with Infinity Sim Wings

Half of the group visited Infinity Sim Wings at Gatwick Airport, where they had the chance to step into the cockpit and learn how to land a commercial aircraft in a realistic flight simulator.

Guided by expert instructors, Explorers were walked through the basics of flight controls, approach techniques, and landing procedures before taking the controls themselves. Many completed smooth landings, while others discovered just how demanding it can be — especially with changing wind conditions and runway alignment to manage!

A huge thank you to Infinity Sim Wings for hosting us and providing such a memorable and unique experience. The team were friendly, knowledgeable, and made everyone feel at ease in the captain’s seat.

🎯 Angel Throwing: Precision and Teamwork

Meanwhile, the other half of the group took part in an Angel Throwing session – an activity focused on accuracy, technique, and a bit of competitive fun.

The session allowed participants to focus on control, coordination, and strategic thinking in a relaxed and engaging environment. As well as developing physical accuracy, the activity encouraged teamwork and reflection on technique – all skills that can be applied in a wide range of Scouting contexts.

🔗 Skills in Different Settings

Though very different in style, both activities gave members the chance to:

  • Try something new
  • Develop personal focus and confidence
  • Work together and support each other
  • Reflect and improve through hands-on experience

We’re looking forward to building on these experiences in future meetings as we continue to explore new challenges and adventures together.
