Autumn Mountain Activity Weekend

3 members of Shackleton joined Drake on their mountain activity weekend in the Peak District this weekend for a fantastic trip. Arriving late on Friday to Gradbach campsite in thick fog, the weather didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves. On Saturday we split into 2 groups, one climbing at the Roaches in the morning whilst the other group went on a hike, and swapping activities for the afternoon. Mountain Activity Weekend

Shackleton ESU travelled to North Wales for their Mountain Activity Weekend Camp from Thursday 11th April to Sunday 14th April. Whilst staying at Cornel Scout Centre, they took part in hill walking and climbing activities. On Friday, the two teams took part in a full days hillwalking including some entry level scrambles. On Saturday, the two groups alternated between natural rock climbing / abseiling and an orienteering trail (which was much harder than it suggested!!!) Standing room only for Remembrance Sunday

Each Remembrance Sunday, Scouts in cities, towns and villages across the UK show their support for the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. This year is made all the more poignant for the fact that that 2018 is the centenary of the Armistice, bringing an end to the First World War. As Britain entered the First World War on 4 August 1914, Robert Baden-Powell – founder of the Scout Movement – volunteered Scouts to support the war effort. Mountain Activity Weekend

From Thursday 25th October to Sunday 28th October, 19 Explorer Scouts and 3 Scout Network from across Crawley District attended the annual mountain activity weekend, staying at a bunk house in Cynwyd, North Wales. Participants spent 3 days walking in the mountains, including Snowdon (the highest peak in North Wales) and rock climbing – and some even managed to get some sleep! Autumn 2018 Newsletter Programme We are in the process of putting together the full programme for the term, and the first meeting back will give the Explorers the opportunity to give their input to ensure we are being truly #YouthShaped! Once completed it will be available on our website. As such, the first meeting back will be Monday 3rd September at 4th Worth Scout hut at 7:30pm until 9:30pm in normal uniform. Explorer Camp

This weekend Stanford Campsite hosted Shackleton Explorers and our summer ’18 activity camp. Not only did we have fantastic weather, but a great programme which included clay pigeon shooting, a hike, rock climbing, and a campfire! Also a great chance for new members to get to know the unit and learn more about the Explorer section.

St George’s Day Parade

St George, the patron saint of scouting, was celebrated in style by hundreds of members of Crawley District on Sunday 22nd April in Queen’s Square, Crawley. Many thanks to those that were able to attend this special celebration!

End of term update

Happy Easter to everyone! The Explorers have had a busy term, and finished on a high with an evening of karting. We have a hike coming up on 13th and 14th April which will count as a practice expedition for those undertaking their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, but is open to everyone and will be a great opportunity to polish navigation skills and camp craft.
