Phil’s Cooking Challenge

  |   By

This evening, the explorers took part in a cooking challenge to create the best tomato soup and toasted cheese sandwich. As easy it should have been, after multiple fire alarms, much burnt toast, each team presented their creation. The results were variable but at least it was all edible!

Jamboree Led Evening

   |   By

Last Monday (28th), Joe, Tom and Leo who are off to Korea next year led the evening. They gave a short presentation about the jamboree, led a jamboree quiz, taught some basic phrases and led a couple of Korean themed games. All in all, a very educational evening!

Rifle Shooting / Tennis

   |   By

Over the last few weeks, we have split into 2 groups and alternated rifle shooting and Tennis/Chip Shop Hike.

Well done to all the shooters who improved over there turns!

Indoor Caving

   |   By

On Monday 17th, we visited some indoor caving to see how our explorers could navigate through dark, tight spaces!

After familiarisation, we had some head to head races before Avighna was named the overall winner.

Well done all for giving it a try, next year we will have to find some real caves!

Chief Scout Awards / Investitures and D of E Expedition Reports

   |   By

On Monday 3rd October, Shackleton Explorers had a very busy evening! We started off with a brief lesson in Heraldry before the Explorers started to design their own coat of arms to represent them.

We then moved onto a more formal part of the evening where we had expedition reports from our 2 D of E Bronze groups and 2 D of E Silver Groups (which parents were welcome to attend).

At the end of the evening, we were joined by Robert Sawyer (our County Commissioner) who presented Chief Scout Gold Awards to Ash, Kevin, Ben and Samuel. He is also presented Chief Scout Platinum Awards to Millie, Jake, Sam and Olivia.

We then invested 6 new members to the unit before Robert awarded the Award for Merit to Sean (who is the Explorer Scout Commissioner) for his commitment to Scouting over an extended period of time.

All in all, a very busy evening celebrating the success of our youth members over the past year – lets hope this continues into future years!

Taskmaster

   |   By

This evening we held a taskmaster evening. 5 different challenges to compete to be crowned the winners from the evening and secure lots of sweets! The tasks were varied including potato art, creating a like for like portrait of the unit leader using only natural materials, eat one, balance 1 and throw, egg chariots and story time.

We also spoke to several of the Explorers and managed to sign off 4 CSA platinums by looking back at the last 18 months of their scouting. There are 4 more close behind so keep getting those D of E sections signed off!

A big thanks to Katie for organising the evening, enjoy your much needed rest at university and see you soon!

Tomahawk Throwing

   |   By

This week, Shackleton Explorers had an evening of Tomahawk Throwing to build on the taster session last year. Several of them were naturals managing to perfectly hit the target over and over… others were not so practised!!!

They also spent some of the waiting time, planning their upcoming assessed expeditions and attempting to build match stick rockets with limited success!

A few photos are available below:

Tent Maintenance and Games

   |   By

As we approach the summer, it was time for us to hold a tent maintenance evening ahead of our upcoming summer camps. Many broken poles were repaired and our shiny new mess tent was put up for the first time.

Now thats out if the way, our next few weeks are back to more exciting activities including tomahawks and rafting.

District Explorer Scout Administrator Investiture … at height

   |   By

Tonight Shackleton and SRF Explorers held a joint meeting taking part in Climbing and Abseiling. In total 40 Explorers attended.

During the evening, we also took the opportunity to present Zac with his YL buckle and invest Dipti, our District Explorer Scout Administrator. Not wanting to waste the fantastic facility, we decided to do an investiture at height as the pictures below show.

We have many different volunteer roles which gives you the opportunity to gain #skillsforlife. Just get in touch to start your adventure today.
