Climbing and Abseiling

   |   By

Last night Shackleton ESU visited Copthorne Prep School for an evening of climbing and abseiling. We also invested one of our new Explorers part way down the abseil tower!

Thanks to Alaric, Ivo and Russell who all came along to help instruct for the evening.

Rounders

  |   By

On Monday 15th, Shackleton had a game of rounders at Grattons Park. Teams were formed evenly however the results were very one sided even after the rounders pitch was expanded to resemble a 400 metre running track!

Monopoly Run Live 2023

  |   By

On Saturday 4th March, 24 Explorers set out to London for Shackleton’s first attempt at the monopoly run. Fuelled by much coffee, sweets and fast food, the Explorers competed against 7000 other scouts to try and be crowned champion. Many steps were walked in a day and the Explorers all looked very worn out by the end of the day! All of our teams were involved in Game 35 and the results were as follows:

Halloween Wide Games

   |   By

On Monday 31st October, we held a Halloween wide games evening. Several of the Explorers dressed up in fancy dress (some costumes were questionable!).

We played traditional games such as apple bobbing, eating the donut from the string plus capture the pumpkin / cone.

A few photos are below:

Archery and Fire Lighting

   |   By

Over the past 2 weeks, the unit split into 2 and did fire lighting and archery at Stanford Scout Campsite.

The explorers started fires using a variety of techniques including flint and steel, exothermic chemical reactions and electricity!

Congratulations to Nathan who was our most accurate archer!

Shackleton Explorers – Raft Building @ Tilgate

   |   By

Tonight our Explorers built traditional rafts from pioneering poles and barrels before giving them a test drive on Tilgate Lake. 3 groups built 3 different rafts and surprisingly all held up fairly well when launched. That didn’t stop a few of the Explorers accidentally falling in!

Traditional rafting is a great way to try something new as traditional rafts are very different to other crafts. It’s also a true test of teamwork, as you’ll all need to play your part to get the raft moving in the right direction.

The best pioneering projects are the ones that are plenty of fun. Traditional rafting is about putting your knotting skills to the test and trusting your teammates’ techniques. After all, if it all falls apart, you’ll be the ones getting wet!
